The Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, is one of the most devastating corn rootworm species in North America, especially in the midwestern corn-growing areas such as Iowa. A related species, the Northern corn rootworm, D. barberi , co-inhabits in much of the range and is fairly similar in biology.
Specific delta-endotoxins that have been inserted with genetic engineering include Cry3Bb1 found in MON 863 and Cry1Ab found in MON 810, both of which are maize/corn cultivars. Cry3Bb1 is particularly useful because it kills Coleopteran insects such as the corn rootworm, an activity not seen in other Cry proteins. [1]
It includes two subspecies, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (the western corn rootworm) and Diabrotica virgifera zeae (the Mexican corn rootworm). [2]
This virus can be transmitted by six species of leaf beetle: cereal leaf beetle (Oulema melanopus), the red-headed flea beetle (Systena frontalis), corn flea beetle (Chaetocnema pulicaria), southern corn rootworm (Diabrotica undecimpunctata), northern corn rootworm (D. longicornis) and western corn rootworm (D. virgifera virgifera).
