Quito was founded by the Spanish in 1534 on the ruins of an Inca settlement. The colonial-era city centre is the best preserved and least altered in Latin America. The first known pirate to visit the islands was Richard Hawkins, in 1593. From then until 1816 many pirates came to the archipelago.
