The 2024–25 Montreal Canadiens season is the franchise's 116th season since its establishment on December 4, 1909, and their 108th season (107th season of play) as member of the National Hockey League.
The 1976–77 Canadiens are widely considered to be the greatest team in NHL history, [2] [3] [4] [111] though arguments exist for the 1955–56 and 1975–76 Canadiens teams as well. [ 112 ] The 1978–79 season capped Montreal's run of four consecutive championships in dramatic fashion.
The Canadiens also became the first team since the 2002–03 Carolina Hurricanes to finish in last place in the NHL a year after making the Stanley Cup Finals. [12] With a total of 720 man-games lost, the team likewise set an NHL record for most injuries in a season, which they would subsequently break the following season .
