Canyon County is located in the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 231,105, [1] which by 2022 was estimated to have risen to 251,065. [2] making it the second-most populous county in Idaho. The county seat is Caldwell, [3] and its largest city is Nampa. Canyon County is part of the Boise metropolitan area.
By the time Idaho was admitted to the Union as the 43rd state in 1890, a further eight counties had been created, bringing the total to 18. After Canyon, Fremont and Bannock Counties had been created, Alturas and Logan Counties were merged to form Blaine County in March 1895; Lincoln County was formed out of Blaine County later the same month.

In the southwest corner of Idaho, State Highway 55 starts at the junction with US-95, approximately two miles (3 km) west of Marsing. The highway heads eastward as it travels through Marsing, crosses the Snake River and the Snake River Valley AVA. The highway continues east to Nampa (mostly as Karcher Road), where it meets Interstate 84 and US-30.
The historic district is named for Map Rock, [2] a massive basalt rock covered in petroglyphs, named by Robert Limbert in the early 1920s. Limbert believed that the rock depicts a map of the Snake River valley, and some authors have suggested that if it is a map then it may be the oldest map in the world.
