Ana María (17 May 1929 – 6 April 1983) was the nom-de-guerre of Dr. Mélida Anaya Montes, the second in command of the Fuerzas Populares de Liberación Farabundo Martí (FPL), the oldest of the five guerrilla organizations making up the FMLN, in El Salvador.
Ana María Avilés was born in Santa Ana, El Salvador. She was the fourth child of Maruca de Avilés and Narciso Avilés and the younger sister of Salvadoran painter Ernesto 'San' Aviles (1932-1991). In 1943, the Avilés family moved to the capital, San Salvador. In 1959, at the age of twenty-two, she married Oswaldo Martínez, an architect.
In March 2011, Major Ana María joined the March for the Color of the Earth (Spanish: "La Marcha por el Color de la Tierra"). This march lasted 37 days, and went from San Cristobal de Las Casas to Mexico City. The delegation was made up of 24 EZLN delegates and representatives from many of the indigenous peoples of Mexico.
