Rend Lake is a 13-mile (20.9 km) long, 3-mile (4.8 km) wide reservoir located in Southern Illinois in Franklin and Jefferson Counties near the town of Benton.It contains 18,900 acres (76 km 2) of water, stores 185,000 acre-feet (228,000,000 m 3) of water, and supplies over 15 million gallons of water per day to 300,000 persons in over 60 communities.
It is essentially an alternate name for the Minnesota River Valley, with a slightly extended area to include towns such as Owatonna. The Twin Cities Metropolitan area includes 13 counties, two of which are in Wisconsin. It is a socio-economic area driven by the twin cities of Minneapolis and the state capital, Saint Paul.

In 1947, the state acquired a 160 acres (65 ha) parcel known as the Wolf Lake State Recreation Area. Later acquisitions were added to the property and have increased the area which was known as Wolf Lake Conservation Area. In 1965, the Illinois General Assembly named the area after William W. The original power company built a 75 foot (23 m) high earthen dam on a branch of the east Fork of Shoal Creek in 1963. The lake filled by 1966 to serve as cooling water for the coal-fired Coffeen Power Station until the shutdown of that plant in 2019.
