The Alfred Village Historic District was granted this designation in 1987 by the U. S. National Register of Historic Places. This District, consisting of 133 properties, encompasses much of the Village’s core with a significant concentration of residential, commercial, civic and religious architecture.

The development of the railroad through the eastern valley caused another name change, so that area became known as Alfred Station. Those who settled further up the Canacadea Creek, to the west, later chose the name Alfred Center for their home, but it is now known simply as the Village of Alfred.
The company provides fire protection (Alfred Fire Department) and emergency medical services (Alfred Ambulance) in the village of Alfred. A.E.Crandall participates in the Allegany County mutual aid plan and also has a dual response agreement with Alfred Station Volunteer Fire Department for service in the Village and Town of Alfred.
