Dáil Éireann (/ d ɑː l ˈ ɛər ən / ⓘ dahl AIR-ən, [4] Irish: [ˌd̪ˠaːlʲ ˈeːɾʲən̪ˠ]; lit. ' Assembly of Ireland ') is the lower house and principal chamber of the Oireachtas (Irish legislature), which also includes the president of Ireland and a senate called Seanad Éireann. [5]
It first formed a government on the basis of a populist programme of land redistribution and national preference in trade and republican populism remains a key part of its appeal. It has formed government seven times since Ireland gained independence: 1932–1948, 1951–1954, 1957–1973, 1977–1981, 1982, 1987–1994, and 1997–2011.
In large part unionists, at least in the north east region, supported its creation while nationalists were opposed. Subsequently, on 6 December 1922, the island of Ireland became an independent dominion known as the Irish Free State but Northern Ireland immediately exercised its right to opt out of the new Dominion.

[2] The Oireachtas consists of the president of Ireland and the two houses of the Oireachtas (Irish: Tithe an Oireachtais): [3] a house of representatives called Dáil Éireann and a senate called Seanad Éireann.
The language is: "The National Assembly shall be constituted of members chosen by and sent from the several Provincial Assemblies." [ 3 ] This National Assembly appears to have no direct link to any French words, although the concept is the same.
