The University of Peradeniya site touches the natural environment of the lower slopes of the Hanthana mountain range. He established and developed the new department, and taught at the Peradeniya Campus until 1973. During his last few years at Peradeniya, he also served in the capacity of the dean of the Faculty of Arts. The university went through a transformation in the 1970s, and the Arts faculty was moved to the Vidyalankara Campus in Kelaniya.
Educated at Dharmaraja College, Kandy, Pathiraja graduated from the University of Peradeniya with an honours degree in Sinhala and Western Classical Culture in 1967. Subsequently he began work as a lecturer in Drama and Performance Arts, [ 3 ] and later obtained a PhD in Bengali cinema from Monash University .
