San Francisco de Conchos is one of the 67 municipalities of Chihuahua, in northern Mexico. [1] The municipal seat lies at San Francisco de Conchos. The municipality covers an area of 1,169.1 km². As of 2010, the municipality had a total population of 2,983, [2] up from 2,669 as of 2005. [3]
San Francisco de Conchos was founded by Fray Alonso de la Oliva, a young missionary who wanted to preach to indigenous communities. In 1604, he founded the Mission San Francisco de los Naturales del Rio de las Conchas, a Franciscan mission. The name "Conchos" comes from the many small shells that were found in the river bed.
The most nearly successful of these attempts was the 1683–1685 outpost at San Bruno, only about 20 kilometers north of Loreto, among the Cochimí. This failure by Admiral Isidro de Atondo y Antillón and the Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino led directly to the success at Loreto 12 years later.
