The Lightning is an American sailing dinghy that was designed by Olin Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens, as a one-design racer and first built in 1938. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] An accepted World Sailing class, the boat is one of the most popular one-design sailing classes in the United States and is also raced in several other countries.
Bruce Goldsmith (March 21, 1936 – June 3, 2007) [1] was a sailor from Michigan. He won twice the Worlds in the Lightning class, [2] [3] was many times North American Champion in several classes as well as gold medalist in the 1967 [4] and 1975 Pan American Games. He died in 2007 at the age of 71 while racing during a storm on Lake Erie. [5] [1]
