"Woke Up This Morning" is a song by British band Alabama 3 from their 1997 album Exile on Coldharbour Lane. The song is best known as the opening theme music for the American television series The Sopranos , which used a shortened version of the "Chosen One Mix" of the song.
That autumn, 114 students sang the song at the Burglund High School Walk Out and march to McComb, Mississippi, city hall. [2] [3] [4] The song spread and became part of the civil rights movement, being one of the most notable pieces among many others. The song is referred to by Pete Seeger in his 1989 book Everybody Says Freedom.
A snippet of "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlife" can be heard at the beginning of The Sopranos: "Mr. Ruggerio's Neighborhood" (episode 3.1) as Tony Soprano walks down the driveway to get his morning newspaper. "Woke Up This Morning" was also used in an episode of BBC series Top Gear, in which the team were driving through Alabama.
The origins of the song are unclear, although one hypothesis is that "Bella Ciao" was originally sung as "Alla mattina appena alzata" ("In the morning as soon as I woke up") by seasonal workers of paddy fields of rice, especially in Italy's Po Valley from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, with different lyrics. In 1980, the album was issued as Woke Up This Morning and Found Myself Dead on the Red Lightnin' label. The album's liner notes state that the tapes of the jam were the property of Mick Cox, guitarist for Eire Apparent, who Hendrix later produced, and imply that it is the first legitimate release of the album. [14]
