The route heads southeast from LA 408 (Hooper Road) along Sullivan Road. It then turns east onto Wax Road, which transitions onto Magnolia Bridge Road. During the war, Robert W. Greenwell joined the Confederate Army, and served as a captain. He was the commander of the East Baton Rouge Guards, which was then Company F, 3rd Louisiana Cavalry, during the Battle of Port Hudson. After the war, most of the resort village known as Greenwell Springs, as well as the Greenwell Springs Hotel, was torn down.
The highway heads northeast along Greenwell Springs Road and, about a mile after exiting the city limits, curves northward. Now running parallel with the Amite River , LA 37 begins a concurrency with LA 64 that lasts through much of Central , a newer city that encompasses smaller communities such as Greenwell Springs .
