The Cook Forest State Park Indian Cabin District is a national historic district that includes 11 contributing buildings. They are single room log cabins located on Toms Run behind the park office. They were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of Camp SP-2, which operated in the park from October 1933 to September 1935. [ 11 ]

Twenty-two rustic cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps can be rented on a weekly basis beginning with the opening of trout season in April and ending at the conclusion of deer season in December.
The cabins are privately owned and are situated in specially designated tracts; occupants must abide by the rules of a Special Use Authorization permit issued by the Forest Service. Permit holders pay an annual fee for use of the land, and are expected to protect the forest environment and maintain the residences.
In the early 1990s, the Forest Service started renting cabins including Musick Guard Station to the public for recreational purposes. [ 2 ] [ 4 ] Because of its rustic architecture and the cabin's unique historic value as an early Forest Service guard station, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

A Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp was established along the Des Plaines River at Dam No. 2 on Cook County Forest Preserve District property, north of Des Plaines, on August 16, 1934. Workers assigned to the camp were tasked with improving the local forest preserves by building parking spaces, shelters, trails, and other facilities.
