It was invented and developed in 2005 and released worldwide on June 20, 2006, capable of storing several hours of high-definition video (HDTV 720p and 1080p).

A year later, Panasonic introduced Blu-ray disc recorders with terrestrial HDTV tuners.
Old Blu-ray players and recorders cannot utilize BD-R LTH; however, a firmware upgrade can enable devices to access BD-R LTH. Panasonic released such a firmware update in November 2007 for its DMR-BW200, DMR-BR100 and MR-BW900/BW800/BW700 models. [ 48 ]
Though the Blu-ray Disc group did add mandatory managed copy to Blu-ray, they did not add HDi. [25] HD DVD players and movies were released in the United States on April 18, 2006. [26] The first Blu-ray Disc titles were released on June 20, 2006, and the first movies using dual layer Blu-ray discs (50 GB) were introduced in October 2006. [27]
