The Tamil calendar (தமிழ் நாட்காட்டி) is a sidereal solar calendar used by the Tamil people of the Indian subcontinent. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It is also used in Puducherry , and by the Tamil population in Sri Lanka , Malaysia , Singapore , Myanmar and Mauritius .
The almanac is popularly referred to as the Pambu Panchangam because the cover page of the almanac carries a prominent image of a snake (Tamil: பாம்பு, pāmpu). The snake referred to here is the Moon in the Panchangam. The image of the snake contains 27 small circles embedded with it.

The Bengali calendar is similar to the Tamil calendar except in that it starts the year with Boiśākh (instead of Choitrô), followed by Jyoisthô etc. The Assamese and Odia calendars too are structured the same way.
