The Pyongsan Shin clan is a Korean noble family, which took its root during the 10th century, at the time of the foundation of the Goryeo Dynasty. At the beginning of the Goryeo period, the country was divided in several kingdoms fighting for supremacy over the peninsula.

The Pyongsan Shin clan lineage makes up about 70% of all those with the surname Shin using the Chinese character 申. The clan's founder was General Sin Sung-gyŏm . This clan associated with a mountain in North Korea called "Pyongsan" ( 平山 , literally "mountain of peace").
He is widely viewed as the founder of the Pyongsan Shin clan, which includes the famous actress Shin Se-kyung. [ 1 ] Sin is remembered today for giving his life for Wang Kŏn in the aftermath of a rout of their forces by Later Baekje near present-day Daegu . [ 2 ]

Shin Saimdang was born and raised in Gangneung at the home of her maternal grandparents. Her father, Shin Myeong-hwa, from the Pyongsan Shin clan, was a government official and a friend of the scholar Jo Gwang-jo, but he was not politically active. Her mother was Lady Yi of the Yongin Yi clan.
Shin Jae-hyo (Korean: 신재효; Hanja: 申在孝; 1812–1884) was a theoretician and adapter of pansori in the late Joseon Dynasty. While not a famous singer of pansori, he contributed much to its development. He organized and recorded the six stories of pansori: Chunhyangga, Simcheongga, Jeokbyeokga, Heungbuga, Sugungga, and Byunggang Saega. [1]
