Stanley Lake is an alpine lake in the western United States, located in Custer County, Idaho, at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The lake is approximately seven miles (11 km) west of Stanley , readily accessed via a three-mile (5 km) spur road from State Highway 21 . [ 1 ]
Stanley Lake and Idaho 21 Elk Creek, Grandjean, Sheep Trail, Stanley Lake and Trap Creek campgrounds are open. Iron Creek Campground is inaccessible due to snow.
The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) is a national recreation area in central Idaho, United States that is managed as part of Sawtooth National Forest.The recreation area, established on August 22, 1972, is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, and includes the Sawtooth, Hemingway–Boulders, and Cecil D. Andrus–White Clouds wilderness areas.
There are hundreds of lakes in the Sawtooth Mountains, most of which have been created by alpine glaciers.The majority of the lakes are within the Sawtooth Wilderness, but several are not yet still within Sawtooth National Recreation Area The largest lakes are Redfish, Alturas, Pettit, Yellow Belly, Stanley, and Sawtooth lakes.
The lake is approximately 11.4 miles (18.3 km) southwest of Stanley. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] A trail from the Redfish Lake Creek trailhead and campground at the southwestern end of Redfish Lake lead about 5 miles (8.0 km) along Redfish Creek to an intersection with a trail that leads up to Alpine Lake.
Additional trails traverse the foothills of the mountains outside the designated wilderness. Camping is permitted anywhere in the wilderness. It is situated seven miles (11 km) west of Stanley, Idaho, in the Sawtooth Wilderness on land managed by Sawtooth National Forest. [2] The mountain can be seen from Highway 21 and from Stanley Lake. Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains to the Salmon River via Crooked Creek and Valley Creek.
