Totally agree. I'm not a fan of the Small Batch (only 4 of the 10 mashbill/yeast combinations at Four Roses). I'd definitely go with the Single Barrel. The Small Batch Select (6 of the 10 mashbill/yeast combinations) is much better than the regular Small Batch and bottled at a higher ABV.
That's what this is. It's a review - a semi-blind side-by-side comparison of the standard 100-proof Four Roses Single Barrel (SiB) and Four Roses Small Batch Select (SBS). The 100-proof single barrel is a well-known quantity - it uses Four Roses' classic OBSV mash/yeast-bill - meaning it uses the high-rye 4R mash bill "B", and the V yeast ...
Small Batch Select is a very consistent product and very good quality. Same with Small Batch. Single Barrel are variable and will have more character, which may or may not be a good thing for you. I have a Single Barrel that definitely feels below the value of what I paid, but also have had some very interesting and tasty Single Barrels.
Generally I prefer the Single Barrel, as the flavor profile and proof lend itself to my preferred palate. With that being said, the recipe used in the Single Barrel will be of higher rye content than the Small Batch (as it's a single barrel of one of their high-rye recipes, vs the Small Batch being a blend of recipes).

Four Roses Showdown, SiB vs SmB Select Tasted neat in a glencairn Glass 1 Appearance: Russet colored. Dark honey almost. Nice thick legs. 7/10. Nose: Good amount of barrel spice and damp oak. Cinammon. A bit of of a light fruit syrup. Something fresh, maybe mint. Decently intense nose.
In April 2019, Four Roses expanded their main line of products from three expressions to four. In addition to 4R Bourbon (formerly and affectionately "Yellow Label"), Small Batch, and Single Barrel at 80, 90, and 100 proof, respectively, Small Batch Select comes in at 104 proof and is advertised as non-chill filtered.
Overall- 7.2/10. Happy to have it, but will probably stickto single barrel selects. Four Roses 2021 Limited Edition Small Batch Age- 16-year-old Bourbon from the OBSV recipe, a 14-year-old OBSQ, a 12-year-old OESK, and a 16-year-old OESV. The regular small batch strives for a consistency that comes from blending, but also a complexity of character that comes from two different yeasts (K and O) being used in the components. The single barrel has the variance from barrel to barrel, but also displays the character of a single, different yeast, (V).
