Amite County / ˈ eɪ. m ɛ t / is a county located in the state of Mississippi on its southern border with Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,720. [1] Its county seat is Liberty. Amite County Courthouse is in Liberty, Mississippi, the county seat for Amite County, Mississippi. It was built from 1839–1841 and is the oldest extant county courthouse building in the state. It is a Mississippi Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [2] A historical marker commemorates its history. [3]

The Amite Female Seminary (also known as the 'Little Red Schoolhouse'), built in 1853, was a girls finishing school located in Liberty.
It was largely founded as a railroad town. Gloster was named after the engineer who put the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley R.R. through in the 1880s. [4] Drax Biomass operates a 450,000-metric-ton (440,000-long-ton) per year wood pellet production facility in Gloster. The facility was expected to create 45 jobs, and is called Amite BioEnergy. [5]
