The phosphate mining industry employed 2,200 people. The value of phosphate rock mined was US$2.2 billion. As of 2015, there are 10 active phosphate mines in four states: Florida, North Carolina, Idaho, and Utah. The eastern phosphate deposits are mined from open pits. The western deposits are mined from both surface and underground mines.
The Oulad Abdoun phosphate deposits encompass some 100 by 45 kilometres (62 by 28 mi), an area of 4,500 square kilometres (1,700 sq mi). [2] The Oulad Abdoun is the largest and northernmost of Morocco's major phosphate basins, which from northeast to southwest, include the Ganntour , Meskala , and Oued Eddahab (Laayoune-Baa) basins.
Today, the mine produces around 3 million tonnes annually, which represents 10% of Morocco's total production. [3] The phosphates are transported to the coast by an automated conveyor belt . Approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) long, the belt is the longest in the world and dust blown from it is visible from space.
The small island nation of Nauru and its neighbor Banaba Island, which used to have massive phosphate deposits of the best quality, have been mined excessively. Rock phosphate can also be found in Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Western Sahara, Navassa Island, Tunisia, Togo, and Jordan, countries that have large phosphate-mining industries.
Namibia is one of the first countries that issued mining licences regarding deep sea mining. studies that took place in 1970s discovered considerable amounts of phosphate deposits. The significance of seabed mining in Namibia's blue economy is highlighted by the country's status as a "phosphate factory".
Phosphorite, phosphate rock or rock phosphate is a non-detrital sedimentary rock that contains high amounts of phosphate minerals. The phosphate content of phosphorite (or grade of phosphate rock) varies greatly, from 4% [1] to 20% phosphorus pentoxide (P 2 O 5). Marketed phosphate rock is enriched ("beneficiated") to at least 28%, often more ...
Morocco is the world's largest producer of phosphate, and contains about 75% of the world's estimated reserves. [1] Mining contributed up to 35% of exports and 5% of GDP in 2011.
