The General Motors X platform (also called X-body) is a rear-wheel drive compact car automobile platform produced from the 1962 to 1979 model years. Developed by Chevrolet, the architecture was initially unique in the U.S. to the Chevy II, first joined by the Pontiac Ventura in 1971, then a range of other GM products as its divisions expanded their compact model lines.
The L78 was a Big-Block engine produced by Chevrolet between 1965 and 1970. Rated at 425 hp (317 kW) for its first year, the rating dropped to 375 hp (280 kW) in subsequent years (although there was no change in power).
The Chevy II's 194 cu in six-cylinder used a 3 + 9 ⁄ 16-inch (90.5 mm) bore, which by 1964 was enlarged to match the 153 four-cylinder's resulting in a displacement of 230 cu in (3,768 cc). The 230 cu in six and 153 cu in four are thus essentially the same design, differing only in cylinder count.
