This is a list of disappearing gun installations. These are artillery installed behind fortification walls with mechanisms that lift the gun for firing and then retract it to protection. These were installed, especially in coastal defenses , from the 1860s until as late as 1923, and were in service as late as the beginning of World War II .
These "hook guns" were in their earliest forms of defensive weapons mounted on German city walls in the early 15th century. [2] The addition of a shoulder stock, priming pan, [3] and matchlock mechanism in the late 15th century turned the arquebus into a handheld firearm and also the first firearm equipped with a trigger.

A siege hook is a weapon used to pull stones from a wall during a siege. The method used was to penetrate the protective wall with the hook and then retract it, pulling away some of the wall with it. The Greek historian Polybius, in his Histories, mentions the use of such weapons at the Roman siege of Ambracia:
