In the King James Version of the Bible, the text reads: Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. The New International Version translates the passage as: Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.
Ptyon, the word translated as winnowing fork in the World English Bible is a tool similar to a pitchfork that would be used to lift harvested wheat up into the air into the wind. The righteous man is compared in verse 3 to a tree planted by a stream. His harvest is plentiful, and whatever he does flourishes. The prophet Jeremiah wrote a similar passage: “But blessed is the man who trusts in the L ORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.”
