Scottville is in central Mason County, 8 miles (13 km) east of the city of Ludington and Lake Michigan, 3 miles (5 km) west of the village of Custer, and 8 miles (13 km) southwest of the village of Fountain (11 miles (18 km) by road). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.49 square miles (3.86 km 2), all land. [2]
The county is named for Stevens T. Mason, Governor of Michigan from 1835 to 1840. [5] It was created by the Michigan Legislature in 1840 as Notipekago County, [6] then renamed Mason County in 1843. The county was administered by Ottawa County prior to the organization of county government in 1855. [4] [1]
