The Downs Light Railway is the world's oldest private miniature railway, [7] with a track gauge of 9 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (241 mm). The railway was built and opened in 1925 under the guidance of Geoffrey Hoyland (Headmaster) as a 7 + 1 ⁄ 4 in ( 184 mm ) gauge railway, for the principal purpose of education.

The museum operates a 7 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (190.5 mm) gauge miniature railway on which these locomotives pull trains that the public can ride. The museum also has multiple smaller gauge railroad layouts for members usage in 4.75" gauge, 3.5" gauge, elevated 1 gauge, and g-scale.

The miniature railway at Hollycombe is 7 + 1 ⁄ 4 in (184 mm) gauge. It starts at the station by the saw mill and climbs past crossing gates and through a cutting. It reaches the top and bends to the left. The fairground is then on the left and the woodland gardens is on the right.
