In the Unified Modeling Language (UML), a two-character ellipsis is used to indicate variable cardinality of an association. For example, a cardinality of 1..* means that the number of elements aggregated in an association can range from 1 to infinity (a usage equivalent to Kleene plus).
HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS can be inserted with Alt+0 1 3 3, using the numeric keypad. In macOS, it can be inserted with ⌥ Opt+; (on an English language keyboard). In some Linux distributions, it can be inserted with AltGr+. (this produces an interpunct on other systems), or Compose... In Android, ellipsis is a long-press key.
For example, \x85 can match a horizontal ellipsis, and if encountered while the ANY newline is in effect, it would trigger newline processing. See below for configuration and options concerning what matches backslash-R.

In the present example, the set of circles is a subset of the set of ellipses; circles can be defined as ellipses whose major and minor axes are the same length. Thus, code written in an object-oriented language that models shapes will frequently choose to make class Circle a subclass of class Ellipse , i.e. inheriting from it.
) should generally be used for ellipsis; this template is intended for specialized usage. This template can be substituted to directly insert the referenced character. The first parameter determines the template's display; with no parameters, it renders as three periods.
