The Backyardigans originated as a live-action pilot episode titled "Me and My Friends", filmed at Nickelodeon Studios Florida and completed in September 1998. The characters were played by full-body puppets on an indoor stage. The pilot was rejected by Nickelodeon, and Burgess decided to rework the concept into an animated series.
The show, now fully animated and renamed The Backyardigans, was greenlit for a full season of 20 episodes. [11] Reflecting on the shift to animation, Burgess said, "Sometimes your first attempt is just not all that great. In this case, my second attempt was much better." [7] The Backyardigans premiered on Nickelodeon on October 11, 2004.
Legendary cowboy and spur maker Billy Klapper had a cameo in season 5, episode 9 of 'Yellowstone,' and was also honored following his recent death.
The episode "The Flipper!"'s rock is in the style of Bo Diddley.
