Marathon des Sables, or MdS, (French for Marathon of the Sands) [1] is a seven-day, about 257 km (160 mi) [2] ultramarathon, which is approximately the distance of six regular marathons. The longest single stage (2009) was 91 km (57 mi) long (2023 : 90.1 km). This multiday race is held every year in southern Morocco, in the Sahara Desert.
Starting in Foum Zguid, Morocco on 10 April 1994, 38-year-old Prosperi set off with Manzo, amongst eighty other runners, to compete in the ultramarathon, his first desert event. [3] During the first three days of the marathon, Prosperi and Manzo covered 96 kilometers (60 mi) of terrain composed of salt beds, rock surfaces and sand dunes. [5]
