The Divine Life Society (DLS) is a Hindu spiritual organization and an ashram, founded by Swami Sivananda Saraswati in 1936, at Muni Ki Reti, Rishikesh, India.Today Divine Life Society has branches around the world, with the headquarters situated in Rishikesh.
The 9th All-India Divine Life Convention was held at Venkatagiri on March 16, 1957, which was presided by Sathya Sai Baba and attended by Satchidananda Saraswati and Swami Sadananda. [12] Following this Sathya Sai Baba visited Rishikesh. Materialising a rudrakasha mala with gold links, he presented it to the Sivananda. [13]
It was one of the first large ashrams to be established in Rishikesh. Before that it was mostly as a place for individual seekers or pilgrims to stop over on way to Char Dham temples pilgrimage. [5] [4] Subsequently, Swami Atmananda founded Swargashram in 1908; Sivananda Ashram was established by Swami Sivananda in 1936.
He founded the Sivananda Ashram on 3 acres (12,000 m 2) of land at the foot of the Holy Batu Caves (a miniature Rishikesh), and became its president. He practised brahmacharya (celibacy) and tapas. The ashram became a centre of pilgrimage in Malaysia. Today, Divine Life Society has 20 branches in Malaysia, twelve set up by mainly by PranavÄnanda.
Chidananda Saraswati [1] (24 September 1916 – 28 August 2008) was president of the Divine Life Society, Rishikesh, India. He is well known in India as a yogi and spiritual leader. He succeeded as president of the Divine Life Society in 1963, after the death of his predecessor, Sivananda Saraswati, who founded the Society. [2]
Built in the year 1986, the bridge is one of the iconic landmarks of Rishikesh. There are many Hindu ashrams and religious centers established on both sides of the Ganges. [ 1 ] Ram Jhula is also a connecting bridge between Sivananda Ashram located in Muni Ki Reti to Gita Bhawan, Parmarth Niketan and other temples located in Swargashram.
