The new hospital was the first in a series of moves which changed Fort Sam Houston from an Infantry to a medical Post. In 1941, the Station Hospital prepared for an overwhelming flow of casualties from World War II battlefields by converting a 220-person enlisted barracks into additional patient wards.
The hospital is on a 118-acre (48 ha) campus on Old Spanish Trail and Almeda, just on the edge of the Texas Medical Center. It is accredited by the Joint Commission , and has 343 hospital beds, a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, and a 120-bed transitional care unit for long-term care.
After 25 1/2 years of operation, the school was deactivated on 15 February 1946 and its mission transferred to multiple schools located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The school underwent various name changes and restructuring over the years; incorporating the diverse medical functional areas of the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) along the way.
