Catania Football Club, commonly known as Catania, is an Italian football club based in the city of Catania, Sicily, that plays in Serie C.. Originally founded in 1908 as Associazione Sportiva pro Educazione Fisica, the club boasts 17 appearances in the top flight, reaching eighth place in Serie A on four occasions: during the early 1960s and again in 2012–13.

The club changed their name from Atletico Leonzio to Atletico Catania, doing a controversial move, specially in the eyes of the club's fans from Lentini. They played for seven seasons in Serie C , coming close to promotion to Serie B twice, reaching the playoffs in both 1996–97 and 1997–98, but missing out both times.
It was renamed in 2002 after former Catania chairman Angelo Massimino (1927–1996). The Angelo Massimino stadium in Catania, formerly the Cibali stadium from the homonymous Catania district in which it is located (it is still commonly known by this name), is the multi-sports stadium that hosts the home matches of Calcio Catania.
On 5 July 2013, Freire officially signed for Catania, [2] although the 22-year-old midfielder had already signed the contract on 10 June, but it was only deposited in the Lega Serie A today. He was signed on a Bosman free transfer and does not require a non-EU transfer being that the player also obtains a Spanish passport. [ 3 ]

In his third spell with the Eastern Sicilian giants, Russo managed 58 appearances with 4 goals, two of which helped his team win promotion, however, he left Catania in August 2006 to play for Calcio Padova .
