Luffy befriends Ace and Sabo, who are like brothers to him, but Sabo is seemingly killed by a World Noble. After returning to Marineford to send a hidden message to his crew, Luffy trains with Rayleigh on Ruskaina Island to learn Haki. Two years later, the Straw Hats reunite and finally make it to Fishman Island.

Luffy is found on an island beach, where he saves a little girl, Medaka, from two pirates. All the villagers, including Medaka's father, have been abducted by Ganzack and his crew and forced into labour. After hearing that Ganzack also stole all the food, Luffy and Zoro rush out to retrieve it. As they fight the pirates, one of them kidnaps Medaka.
All the members of the crew are big fans of Luffy and named their ship "Going Luffy-senpai" after him. The crew consists of a total of 56 members including: Bartolomeo ( バルトロメオ ) is a former super rookie and captain of the crew, who has the power to create invisible barriers around him thanks to the Barrier-Barrier Fruit.
Luffy discovers the junkyard is named the Gray Terminal. Luffy runs after Ace when he steals the treasure and run into Sabo, a boy who lives there. Luffy discovers the stolen treasure and is tied up. Luffy screams and Porchemy, a member of the Bluejam Pirates, finds them. Luffy, Ace and Sabo escape, but Luffy is captured by Porchemy.
Luffy and Chopper wander off, both meeting other pirates who had previously arrived and participated in the trials. Luffy receives an ominous warning about Baron planning to split up his crew. Chopper learns about Baron's past, but right before he figures out the mystery, he is stricken with an arrow shot by Baron.
Luffy tries to destroy the wax pedestal threatening the lives of his friends, while Mr. 3 fights to keep it intact. Once Luffy sent the officer agent flying into the jungle, the captives find Luffy unwilling to help them, because Mr. 3's partner, Miss Golden Week has him firmly under control with her emotion inducing paintings.
Luffy goes one on one against Zephyr, but is overpowered and defeated when Zephyr grabs Luffy with his Battle Smasher arm. Realizing that Luffy is the grandson of Monkey D.
