Malaysia and Singapore first agreed to build the 350-kilometer line in 2013, and signed a bilateral agreement in 2016. Train services were meant to commence by 2026.
As a result of the agreement, Singapore permanently became distinct and separate from Malaysia with effect from 9 August 1965, and rendered the Malaysia Agreement invalid in regards to Singapore.
