Big Spring Historic District is a national historic district located at Van Buren, Carter County, Missouri. It encompasses 26 contributing buildings , 1 contributing site, and contributing structure in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways .
In the U.S. state of Missouri both state parks and state historic sites are administered by the Division of State Parks of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. As of 2017 the division manages a total of 92 parks and historic sites plus the Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry , which together total more than 200,000 acres (81,000 ha). [ 1 ]
Located about four miles downstream from Van Buren, it is within the boundaries of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, and its visitor facilities are managed by the National Park Service. It is a contributing resource to Big Spring Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. [3] [4]
The park includes many caves, including Round Spring Caverns, which offers ranger-led tours in the summer. Other notable caves include the Devils Well sink and Jam-Up Cave. [1] The park is traversed by the Ozark Trail, a popular long-distance hiking trail that passes Rocky Falls and crosses the Current River on Highway 106 at Powder Mill.
Also known historically as Clark Spring, [18] Big Spring is Neosho's largest spring and is located near the historic downtown in the city's main park, Big Spring Park. This spring issues at the base of a high bluff of Mississippian limestone from a series of cavernous openings developed along a bedding plane, and flows through the city park.

The community is in the valley of the Loutre River, a tributary of the Missouri. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Big Spring CDP has a total area of 3.38 square miles (8.75 km 2), of which 0.03 square miles (0.08 km 2), or 0.74%, are water. [2]
