Elk River High School entered the M8 as a competitor in the sport of football in 2010 and Duluth East and Duluth Denfeld High Schools joined the conference for football in the fall of 2012. St. St. Francis, Chisago Lakes Area, and North Branch Area High School began competing in the Mississippi 8 Conference during 2013-14 school year.

The South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) is an organization that regulates high school sports in South Carolina. Each year since 1916, the SCHSL has crowned a state champion in football. Every fall, a postseason consisting of a 32 school bracket is played to determine a winner. The divisions for football are based on school enrollment.

The school mascot is the Buckaroo and the school colors are orange and black. It is a part of the San Juan School District. [4] The school won its first football state championship in 1969. They also won the 1A Football State Championship in 1992, 2001, and 2004, defeating the Rich Rebels at all three.
