The school was opened in September 1977 to replace Quarry Bank Boys School and Quarry Bank Girls School, two schools which had existed on Coppice Lane since the early 1930s. The new school was situated on Stockwell Avenue and now has more than 1,300 pupils aged 11–16 on the roll.
In September 2019 a new site opened at Quarry Hill Campus. This new site was estimated to cost £60 million and is home to the School of Creative Arts, the School of Social Science, higher education provision in the creative arts and some space allocated to Leeds College of Music . [ 15 ]

The school was founded in 1921 as Quarry Bank High School for Boys and its first intake of 225 pupils was on 11 January 1922. [1] The first headmaster of the school was R. F. Bailey (an old Etonian), who formed the school on the principles of public school houses. Subsequently, the first year boys' house was named Bailey. [1]
