All of Tennessee can experience snow, as danielj72 said. Some parts get much more than others, and it largely follows elevation. For example, Franklin, located just south of Nashville, averages just 1 inch of snow per year. Cookeville, located on the Highland Rim an hour east of Nashville, averages 7 inches of snow per year.

You'll definitely find those things in Nashville too. Nashville and its suburbs have excellent greenway systems. There's a large farmers market downtown and some smaller ones around the city. There are several good neighborhoods in the city for local shopping/eating: East Nashville/5 Points, Germantown, 12 South, Hillsboro Village, etc.

Charlotte seems more influenced perhaps by 'east coast' (ATL), and Nashville is really not that "southern" either, and definitely not almost midwest like St. Louis.. Austin might make for a decent overall comparison. The suburbs around Indianapolis do remind me a lot of around Nashville--- Carmel, Zionsville. Nashville is sort of kind of 'stand ...

It is so funny when out of towners new to the area say it doesn't snow in Nashville, or get freaked out over the threat of snow, Im always like, well it used to snow all the time, have pics to prove. After last years snows, and 2 cold winters in a row, 09 and 10, maybe we are getting back into a cold, snowier winter pattern, after 15 years.

The first winter we had one snow of a couple of inches in January and a few dustings. Go to the Cookeville photo thread and there is a picture of Tennessee Tech after the January snow. This last winter was a bust for snow; just a couple of light dustings.

I have to say Melbourne because their winters are way warmer but Nashville got hotter summers. Melbourne climate will be much better with Nashville hotter summers and Nashville will be much better with Melbourne milder winters. Nashville ain't no joke in the winter, even if it's not bad as places like Chicago or any of those northern cities.
