Hauppauge (/ ˈ h ɔː p ɒ ɡ / HAW-pog) is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the towns of Islip and Smithtown in western Suffolk County, New York, on Long Island. Its population in 2022 was estimated at 20,401 by the U.S. Census Bureau . [ 1 ]
As of the census [5] of 2000, there were 1,173 people, 458 households, and 327 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 225.0 inhabitants per square mile (86.9/km 2).
The route runs south-to-north from NY 27A in East Islip to NY 111 in Hauppauge, just south of exit 56 on I-495 (the Long Island Expressway). Originally, CR 17 was an alignment of NY 111 (designated as State Highway 1208 internally). On September 13, 1966, the alignment was transferred from the state to Suffolk County and redesignated CR 17. [2]
The junction serves as the western terminus of NY 347 and the eastern terminus of the Northern Parkway.
