Nymphaea alba, the white waterlily, European white water lily or white nenuphar / ˈ n ɛ nj ʊ f ɑːr /, is an aquatic flowering plant in the family Nymphaeaceae. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [ 7 ] It is native to North Africa, temperate Asia, Europe and tropical Asia (Jammu and Kashmir).
Paeonia lactiflora was known as the white peony (P. albiflora) when first introduced into Europe. [4] It was brought to England in the mid-18th century, and is the parent of most modern varieties. It has been grown as an ornamental in China since the 7th century. [2] The Latin specific epithet lactiflora means "with milk white flowers". [5]
Ipomoea alba, known in English as tropical white morning glory, moonflower or moonvine, is a species of night-blooming morning glory, native to tropical and subtropical regions of North and South America, from Argentina to northern Mexico, Arizona, Florida [3] and the West Indies. [4]
The flower's common name Edelweiß is German (and Edelwyss or Alpe-Edelwyss in Alemannic German), and is a compound of edel "noble" and weiß "white". The Slovene name is planika, meaning mountain girl. In Romanian, it is known as floare de colț, which means "cliff flower".
The flowers, which are usually conspicuous and white or yellow, sometimes both or rarely green, consist of a perianth of three parts. Closest to the stem (proximal) is a floral tube above the ovary , then an outer ring composed of six tepals (undifferentiated sepals and petals), and a central disc to conical shaped corona .
Tabernaemontana divaricata, commonly called pinwheel flower, [3] crape jasmine, East India rosebay, and Nero's crown, [4] is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to South Asia, Southeast Asia and China. [1] In zones where it is not hardy it is grown as a house/glasshouse plant for its attractive flowers and foliage.
The bulbs begin to grow as soon as they are planted, with flowers appearing in 3–4 weeks. Narcissus papyraceus thrives in moist, peat moss based potting mix. Plants can also be grown in containers of water. Cool temperatures between 50–65 °F (10–18 °C) and indirect light will help to prolong the bloom time. [4] [5]
