Burke County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 87,570. [1] Its county seat is Morganton. [2] Burke County is part of the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The county and town are named for Griffith Rutherford, leader of an expedition against the Cherokee in 1776 and a general in the American Revolutionary War. [5] In 1791 parts of Rutherford County and Burke County were combined to form Buncombe County. [6] In 1841 parts of Rutherford and Lincoln counties were combined to form Cleveland County. [7]
Connelly Springs is located in eastern Burke County. It is bordered to the west by the town of Rutherford College and to the north by Rhodhiss Lake on the Catawba River. Interstate 40 forms part of the southern boundary of the town and leads east 10 miles (16 km) to Hickory and west 10 miles (16 km) to Morganton.
