The Canon-McMillan School District was founded on September 15, 1954, in a merger between the Canonsburg, Cecil Township, and North Strabane Township schools. Canon-McMillan High School was formerly known as Canonsburg High school and Cecil High School when the name was changed. The high school moved to its current location in 1958.

The association publishes Class Newsletters and sponsors Class Reunions and Constituent Network events. Most classes meet every five years, although a single reunion is held each year for the Sul Ross Group, all classes which graduated 55 or more years ago. The Association assists in coordination with over 250 local A&M club chapters.
The school colors are black and gold, and the school mascot is the Panther as of the 2023-2024 school year. Plano East Senior High School, McMillen High School, and Williams High School all now don the black and gold for the Panthers.
