Rose painting with floral paintings in a traditional design. Rose-painting, rosemaling, rosemåling or rosmålning is a Scandinavian decorative folk painting that flourished from the 1700s to the mid-1800s, particularly in Norway.
The Hallingdal rosemaling style, also used by Grøt, is symmetrical, similar to a butterfly, with a center and a left and right-hand side that mirror each other. It may be a coincidence that in the Norwegian word rosemålere is the name of a genus of butterflies . The name rosemåler sounds very similar to rosemaler.
