The National Wool Museum was established in Geelong, Victoria in 1988 as part of the Australian Bicentennial Celebrations. Housed in the former Dennys, Lascelles Ltd Woolstore at 26 Moorabool Street, Geelong, [1] the Museum began its life as the National Wool Centre and was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 14 April 1988.

The company's 1872 bluestone woolstore in central Geelong is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, and now houses the National Wool Museum. An 1881 annexe was demolished in 1983, while the 1990 demolition of the landmark 1910 "Bow Truss Building" addition to the woolstore caused a major controversy over heritage preservation. [4]
