Colby opened the season on the road, facing down two-time defending state champion Bowdoin. Defying prediction, the Mules took control of the game form the start and barely allowed the home team an opening. The offense looked far better than it had a year before, scoring once per period, but it was on the defensive side that Colby raised eyebrows.
Three difficult games at the end of the month not only put the state championship out of reach, but gave the distinct possibility that the Mules would finish with a losing record. The final match was played at home against Bowdoin, however, because of poor ice the game was ragged and slow.
The Colby Mules women's ice hockey program represents Colby College. The team used to compete in the ECAC. Currently, the club is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). The Mules were one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the 12-team Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The 1947–48 Colby Mules men's ice hockey season was the 23rd season of play for the program but first under the oversight of the NCAA.The Mules represented Colby College and were coached by Bill Millett, in his 15th season.
