St. Augustine Catholic Church and Cemetery, or the Isle Brevelle Church, is a historic Catholic parish property founded in 1829 near Melrose, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. It is the cultural center of the Cane River area's historic French, Spanish, Native American and Black Creole community.
The church building ceased being a cathedral on August 6, 1910, when the see city was transferred from Natchitoches to Alexandria. [4] It was listed as a contributing property in the Natchitoches Historic District in 1974. [5] Pope Benedict XVI elevated the church to the status of a minor basilica on February 22, 2009. [2]
The site, now preserved in the state-run Los Adaes State Historic Site, is located on Louisiana Highway 485 in present-day Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
