Portsmouth is served by two major U.S. Routes: 23 and 52. Other significant roads include Ohio State Routes 73, 104, 139, 140, and 335. The nearest Interstate highway is I-64. Interstate 73 is planned to use the newly built Portsmouth bypass (i.e., Ohio State Route 823) en route from North Carolina To Michigan.

The Tremper Mound and Works are a Hopewell (100 BCE to 500 CE) earthen enclosure and large, irregularly shaped mound.The site is located in Scioto County, Ohio, about five miles northwest of Portsmouth, Ohio, on the second terrace floodplain overlooking the Scioto River.

[5] Cleveland based Wright Airlines served Portsmouth for a short time in the late 1960s. [6] Service on the three airlines in the 1960s are as follows. Lake Central used Douglas DC-3 & Nord 262 aircraft to Cincinnati.
After the GM&N was consolidated into the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio in 1940, the locomotive was renumbered No. 580 and served in passenger service before being retired in 1950. The locomotive is currently owned and operated by the Reading & Northern, based out of Port Clinton, Pennsylvania in excursion service .

[6] [7] In 2003, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) commenced construction on a $1.8 million project to realign SR 335 from Dixon Mill Road to Gampp Lane in Scioto County east of the CSX railroad line. [8] The realignment project was completed in May 2005. [9]
