Ibrahim's family was either from Persian nobles of the region or from Arab origins from Kufa in what is now Iraq. He was born in Balkh, now in Afghanistan. According to some historians he was maternally descended from the 2nd Rashid caliph Umar. Accounts of Ibrahim's life are recorded by medieval authors such as ibn Asakir and Muhammad al-Bukhari.

The Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim ibn Adham is located in the city of Jableh, Latakia Governorate, Syria. The mosque dates back to the Seljuk era and was subsequently improved by the Mamluks and Ottomans , the latter two whose contributions are still present predominantly [ 1 ] in the modern building.
Tradition makes him the disciple of Ibrahim ibn Adham. He emphasized the importance of tawakkul or reliance upon God. Some sources state he was a teacher of Bayazid Bastami. He was a student of Abu Hanifa and a lifelong companion of his classmate and later Abbasid chief justice Abu Yusuf. [3]
