As of 2014, the Ross procedure comprises less than 1% of all aortic valve replacements in North America. [1] The procedure was first performed using the subcoronary method in 1967 by Donald Ross, for whom the procedure is named. [8] [11] The root replacement method was introduced in the early 1970s. [8]
Donald Nixon Ross, FRCS (4 October 1922 – 7 July 2014) was a South African-born British thoracic surgeon who was a pioneer of cardiac surgery and led the team that carried out the first heart transplantation in the United Kingdom in 1968. He developed the pulmonary autograft, known as the Ross procedure, for treatment of aortic valve disease.
The surgeon incises the aorta a few milometers above the sinotubular junction (just above the coronary ostia, where the coronary arteries join the aorta) – a process known as aortotomy. After this, cardioplegia is delivered directly through the ostia. [30] [31] The heart is now still and the surgeon removes the patient's diseased aortic valve.
