In 1780, Kentucky County was divided into Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties. Kentucky was admitted as a state in 1792, when it had nine counties. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 159 square miles (410 km 2), of which 151 square miles (390 km 2) is land and 8.1 square miles (21 km 2) (5.1%) is water. [9] It is the fourth-smallest county in Kentucky by land area and fifth-smallest by total area. It lies along the Ohio and Licking Rivers.
